How to optimize our digestion to “better digest” the  holidays?

A balanced life is about the relationship between our physical and mental state.The health of our digestive tract is an integral part of this balance and contributes to our overall well-being. But unfortunately, maintaining this balance is easier said than done. Especially with the end-of-year celebrations through which we all tend to indulge and to enjoy good food, generous desserts, all paired with good wines.

Unfortunately, this can lead to unpleasant consequences on our digestive system. Here are some tips to help promote good digestion, not only to help be more serene during these upcoming, but also in our everyday life, starting by following a healthy lifestyle1.

  • Avoid certain foods

It is important to reduce the consumption of foods that can disrupt digestion such as fatty foods (deli-meats, cheeses, rich sauce and pastries) or foods such as cabbage, onions, artichokes, beans, and sweets that cause bloating and gaz. Moderation is also required for starch-based and floury food (potatoes, rice, pasta, pizza), because when consumed in too large a quantitiy, they can lead to constipation.

  • Bring comfort to our digestive tract by practicing these good habits:

  • Drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day. Drinking mineral water can also help reduce stomach acidity;
  • Eat three meals a day, at regular times, being seated and quietly if possible for at least 20 minutes;
  • Take the time to properly chew your food before swallowing;
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing that can compress the area around your belly.

In addition:

  • Perform regular physical activity;
  • Try to manage stress.
  • Add more fiber and probiotics to our diet.

Fiber plays a motor role in digestion. They are found in plants such as fruits and vegetables, cereals and legumes.
